Aracy de Almeida - Noel Rosa | 78rpm (1950)

Let's start this Samba Saturday at Loronix with a classy album, awaited by several Loronixers since it was presented months ago. I was very reluctant to make this album, since it is a gift given by a very special friend on a very special day, my first flight to Sao Paulo as zecalouro. It was also my first chance to meet Caetano Rodrigues.

I want to say thank you, thank you, and thank you to Mr. W. He was the first Loronixer I could meet in Sao Paulo and I will never forget the support and this beautiful gift he gave and I kindly present here to Loronixers.

This is Aracy de Almeida - Noel Rosa | 78rpm (1950), for Continental, which is a "box set" featuring three different Aracy de Almeida 78rpm recordings with Noel Rosa compositions. The three discs were recorded for the occasion; they are numbered in a sequence as 16317-A-B, 16318-A-B and 16319-A-B. Maestro Radames Gnattali is in charge of arrangements and three different groups back Aracy de Almeida on each disc, the first one features Quarteto Continental, the second has Francisco Sergi e Sua Orquestra and the third brings Vero e Sua Orquestra. My apologies to the friends who were waiting several months for this release, this collection is truly amazing and now I understand their worry. Tracks include:

Hello, Good Evening! One of the benefits of the new Loronix design is the chance of showing bigger videos. Orquestra de Lyrio Panicali - Nova Dimensao (1964)

I've been thinking a lot on the right approach to this post. This record is probably among the top five albums available at this website and I feel in the obligation to be straightforward, making sure you do not skip this one. Unfortunately, there are some pitfalls that can cheat you and we need to avoid, such as:

1) Do not take it as another orchestra album.
2) Do not take it as another orchestra album with Bossa Nova standards.
3) Do not think I'm crazy, everyone who listens agrees with me.

This is Orquestra de Lyrio Panicali - Nova Dimensao (1964), for Odeon. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I will file Nova Dimensao as Samba Jazz, instead of Orchestra. This is truly in the Samba Jazz style with a drummer playing such like Edison Machado, Milton Banana or any other drummer of instrumental trios from the 60's. Anyway, I think I could write several paragraphs of text covering each different and unique aspect of this album, but I will let you go for your weekend with the very good company of this legendary album. A Cor do Som - Transe Total (1980)

A couple of weeks ago we released an album of a Brazilian instrumental jazz fusion band recorded in Montreux Jazz Festival, by that time, I though that A Cor do Som was retired since their last album released in 1986, but I heard they are back to business and had already recorded a DVD. Many friends in Brazil of my generation have very good memories of this band and I think we will not go wrong with them to start today. This cover is all about the new Loronix design with a logo full of colors. Let's see.

This is A Cor do Som - Transe Total (1980), for WEA. Perhaps the most successful album released by A Cor do Som, featuring tracks with lyrics and some instrumental themes, which are the ones that I like most. The tracks with lyrics were blockbusters in 1980 and my highlights go to O Palco, the definitive rendition of this Gilberto Gil song, Zanzibar and Semente do Amor. Transe Total has the participation of Nivaldo Ornellas, Oswaldinho do Acordeon, Mauro Senise, Jorginho among many other special guests. Tracks include:

Clara Nunes - Clara Nunes (1973)

I was saving this post for some of those Loronix Samba Saturday, but I think it will fit very nice today, such like an amulet to bring lucky and keep the Murphy Law away from my computers for a while. This album is truly beautiful, starting by the cover artwork, showing a painting of Clara Nunes made by Luiz Jasmin. Sometimes these covers are so great that I cannot resist showing the opposite side together with the front side. Let's see.

This is Clara Nunes - Clara Nunes (1973), for Odeon, pretty unknown album, perhaps for being released between two great ones, Clara, Clarice, Clara (1972) and Alvorecer (1974). Clara Nunes had support of several Brazilian Maestros writing the arrangements, Laercio de Freitas, Carlos Monteiro de Souza, Helio Delmiro and Orlando Silveira. This is also the third album she made with direction of Lindolfo Gaya. We know everything about arrangers, but little about musicians, they are not credited and my searches did not give results. Doris Monteiro - 78rpm | Todamerica 5220 (1952)

Here we go on the 78-rpm album of the day and the first in the format recorded by the legendary label Todamerica, active from the 50's until the early 70's. As far as I know, Todamerica released only in the 78rpm format, even after the popularization of the LPs. Todamerica made these beautiful labels with pictures of the artists, such as this one featuring Doris Monteiro.

This is Doris Monteiro - 78rpm | 5220 (1952), for Todamerica, featuring songs from the Brazilian movie Agulha no Palheiro. Orchestra backs Doris Monteiro. I'm not sure if Doris Monteiro was also an actress on this movie, it is something that really worth checking out. Tracks include:

Severino Araujo e Orquestra Tabajara - Brasil (1981)

Hello, Good Evening! It's been a hard day's night, and I've been working like a parrot this week. Especially today, managing customers and also working on features to Loronix, amazing features by the way. What a day, I lost a computer an hour ago, not a big deal, but I will need to spend a lot of time fixing it. Life has been really busy down here.

Anyway, better start with something very positive and happy, such like the legendary Orquestra Tabajara by the mighty Maestro Severino Araujo, leader and founder of Orquestra Tabajara. Let's see.

This is Severino Araujo e Orquestra Tabajara - Brasil (1981), for Phonodisc. Orquestra Tabajara is active since 1937 and it is probably the oldest Brazilian orchestra in activity. I think Maestro Severino Araujo and his orchestra need to be released more often, with attention on their several 78 rpm as main performers or backing renowned artists. Tracks include:

The Seven Stars - The Seven Stars (1959)

Here we go on the Para Dancar release of the day, featuring the first album of a group that was introduced with a contribution of the great Mauro R.V., which was not released at Loronix yet. The Seven Stars released three albums being Mauro's contribution their second. Let's check this first, making the one sent by Mauro later this month.

This is The Seven Stars - The Seven Stars (1959), for Discobras. Little I know about this Para Dancar group that delivers really beautiful renditions of American standards. The album is an LP, but the running time is short as if it is a 10-inch album, with 23 minutes. The back cover brings an introductory text of The Seven Stars with a delicious English translation that really worth to be reproduced here. Tracks include:

Here is a band that represents the American Popular Music: "The Seven Stars". For its wonderful style, the consistent play of execution and beauty of the music played.

Without intending to be classic, this band has one aim: amusement! So, this record gives a true impression of news, utilizing the popular style musicians of the American Music. Soon we will be whistling and singing these lovely songs, and also dancing under the sound of these melodies!

"The Seven Stars" is going to surprise the Brazilian record world and we believe the dancing public will give it its preference. Each musician shows a skilled technique; he does not just play. And this thrilling performance makes the dancer... feel like he is walking in the clouds... in a romantic touch!

If the record players listen carefully to "The Seven Stars" they will have a logical conclusion about an excellent band: there is, no doubt a Musical "Success"!

Raul de Barros - O Trombone de Ouro (1983)

Gafieira is a Brazilian dancing style based on Samba that had a great popularity in the 30's to 40's in Rio de Janeiro, a time with no TV sets, iPods or video games. Raul de Barros is "O Rei da Gafieira" (The King of the Ballroom), being active since the 40’s. This is one of Raul de Barros latest albums and I would like very much that you send feedback on it. Let's see.

This is Raul de Barros - O Trombone de Ouro (1983), for CID, featuring a repertoire of classic tunes in the Gafieira genre, including the legendary Na Gloria, one of the greatest Raul de Barros compositions. I'm a big fan of the Gafieira style, some kind of soft instrumental Samba that is really delicious to hear. My highlight goes to 01 - Na Gloria, 03 - Copacabana, 04 - Doce de Coco... better stop here and take the whole track list as my highlight. Tracks include:
