Cartola - Cartola 70 Anos (1979)

Hello, good evening! Tomorrow is Saturday and it has been a long time since we made one of those Saturdays with full focus and dedication to good Samba music. I’m brand new to Cartola and each new record I get for a spin seems to be better than the last one. Cartola music is sublime and although he is not essentially a Samba singer, his interpretations are sweet and sometimes moving. Perhaps we cannot make a Samba Saturday tomorrow, but at least we will cross the whole day with one of the most acclaimed Brazilian Samba legends ever. Let’s see.

This is Cartola – Cartola 70 Anos (1979), for RCA, celebrating Cartola 70th Anniversary and featuring renowned Brazilian musicians. Maestro Nelsinho is in charge of the arrangements and you can see Nelsinho in the right, besides Haroldo Barbosa and Sergio Cabral. Cartola performs his own compositions, including Ciencia e Arte (Cartola / Carlos Cachaca), recorded for Escola de Samba Estacao Primeira de Mangueira in 1949 and not selected by Mangueira leaders to be the official song of Carnaval parade on that year. The selection of Loronix Preview Center track is always difficult with Cartola albums, so I decided to just take the first track, O Inverno de Meu Tempo (Cartola / Roberto Nascimento). Tracks include:

Varios Artistas - IV Festival Internacional da Cancao (1969)

Hello, good afternoon! I want to take advantage of an available time to fill this sunny Friday afternoon with music provided by my mother. The only issue of a post made on such extraordinary time of the day is the lack of research. Little I know about this IV Festival Internacional da Cancao, except the nice performers we have inside and the nice tunes they perform. I don’t have idea if there is a whole Odeon series with all these Festival Internacional da Cancao concerts and if there are also albums featuring the international performers, not only the Brazilian artists. Let’s see.

This is IV Festival Internacional da Cancao (1969), for Odeon, featuring Brazilian performers, including two Samba divas performing Bossa Nova in their earlier years, Clara Nunes and Beth Carvalho, and important artists, such like Marcos Valle, Antonio Adolfo & A Brazuca, Taiguara, Eva, Goden Boys and the nice vocal group Quarteto Forma.

If you want to know more about the music of Festival da Cancao years, you cannot miss the website of my friend Marcia Weber, now featuring the whole story about the song Juliana, performed by Antonio Adolfo & A Brazuca. Marcia Weber Festivais da Cancao website is http://festivaisdacancao.blogspot.com. Tracks include:

Maria Helena Raposo - Encantamento (1958)

Hello, good evening! I saw this album for the first time at Jorge Mello’s place, and this is another amazing contribution sponsored by Jorge Mello. Actually, some Jorge Mello’s albums were selected by my feeling. I remember that day, a great day. It was a hot day and we were talking about many things such like two kids. While talking, I was also browsing Jorge Mello’s collection and making decisions. It was a challenge to keep the conversation and selecting the contributions. I admit that some of them were selected only by instinct; such like this one, but every selection I made with no detailed examination brought great surprises, such like this one. Let’s see.

This is Maria Helena Raposo – Encantamento com Maria Helena Raposo (1958), for the legendary label Mocambo, featuring the first and probably the only album recorded by the Brazilian singer Maria Helena Raposo, a classical singer making her initial steps towards the popular music. Actually, Maria Helena Raposo recorded a 78RPM at the same Mocambo in 1956. The repertoire features three Ary Barroso compositions, and the first recording of Estrada do Sol, written by Antonio Carlos Jobim in 1956 with lyrics by Dolores Duran in the end of the same year, a real treat for Antonio Carlos Jobim admirers, essentially, everybody. Estrada do Sol is available at Loronix Preview Center. Tracks include:

01 - Prece (Marino Pinto / Vadico)
02 - Na Baixa do Sapateiro (Ary Barroso)
03 - Estrada do Sol (Tom Jobim / Dolores Duran)
04 - Ninguém (Flávio Cavalcanti / Celso Cavalcanti)
05 - Só Você (César Cruz / Silvinha Drumond)
06 - Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 - Bebeco e Doca (Ary Barroso / Luis Peixoto)
08 - Antigamente (Vadico / Jarbas Melo)
09 - Portão Antigo (Antônio Maria)
10 - Nega Nhanhá (Ary Barroso)

Fafa Lemos - Fafa Lemos e Seu Violino com Surdina (1955)

Hello, good evening! Among the albums brought by my mother last week, this is certainly the most inquisitive one. Not only to be an album that I never heard before, but for the circumstances in which it was found. I have a mania to wonder what happened with these old albums until they arrive here. When it is found in Copacabana, for instance, it is easy to realize that it was part of a given collection sold to a record shop once the owner died or decided to get rid of them. But when it is found in a remote location, such like this one in the suburb of Rio de Janeiro, it is impossible to realize the path it took to get here. Anyway, I would like to have more time to visit these stores in the suburban area and try to reverse this course, perhaps a nice opportunity to find new friends and also great albums. Let’s see.

This is Fafa Lemos – Fafa Lemos e Seu Violino com Surdina (1955), for RCA Victor, featuring the legendary violinist, singer and why not, whistler Fafa Lemos at his best, performing a repertoire of his own compositions, Brazilian and international tunes. Fafa Lemos was part of the original formation of Trio Surdina with Garoto (violao) and Chiquinho do Acordeon (accordion). I’m not sure if Fafa Lemos was the first to introduce the violin to Brazilian popular music, but I’m sure Fafa Lemos is the musician that better made it. My highlight goes to 03 – Time Perna de Pau with lyrics sung by Fafa Lemos and 02 – Delicado, which is my pick at Loronix Preview Center. Tracks include:

01 - Feitiço da Vila (Noel Rosa / Vadico)
02 - Delicado (Waldir Azevedo)
03 - Time Perna de Pau (Vicente Amar)
04 - Mil Violinos (Jay Livingston / Evans / De Liano)
05 - Dengoso (Renaud)
06 - Chão de Estrelas (Silvio Caldas / Orestes Barbosa)
07 - Giannina Mia (O. Harbach / R. Friml)
08 - Fafá Em Hollywood (Fafá Lemos)

Milton Banana Trio - Ao Meu Amigo Vinicius | Samba e Isso Vol. 5 (1981)

Hello, good evening! We are having a sunny Sunday today, such like a summer day. I’m just back from a quick walking along the beach. I could not make it as planned since my feet still hurts when walking. I would like to share my good feelings about this nice Sunday with everybody presenting another great finding from my mother, which is Milton Banana Trio tribute to Vinicius de Moraes. Let’s see.

This is Milton Banana Trio – Ao Meu Amigo Vinicius | Samba e Isso Vol. 5 (1981), for RCA, featuring Milton Banana performing a repertoire based on Vinicius de Moraes music, the last out of five albums released under a series called “Ao Meu Amigo”, tribute albums to Milton Banana friends. Milton Banana delivers his unique drumming and sings in some tracks.

I would like to talk about this enchanting cover. It is the kind of cover they no longer make on the narrow CD space. Milton Banana is drinking in front of the legendary Garota de Ipanema, which is alleged to be the place where Garota de Ipanema tune was composed by Vinicius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim. There are several nice details, the empty chair in front of Milton, probably Vinicius de Moraes chair that passed away one year earlier, the girl of Ipanema itself on bikini, the urban sign indicating the restaurant address, Vinicius de Moraes with Prudente de Moraes street, the sun up showing the photo was taken in the middle of the day with Garota de Ipanema empty, anyway, it is the kind of cover that you spent a day running over each detail. Tracks include:

01 - O Morro Não Tem Vez (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) Chega de Saudade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 - Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) Minha Namorada (Carlos Lyra / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 - A Felicidade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) Água de Beber (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) Ela É Carioca (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
04 - Samba Em Prelúdio (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes) Primavera (Carlos Lyra / Vinicius de Moraes)
05 - Só Danço Samba (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) Brigas Nunca Mais (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
06 - Bom Dia Tristeza (Vinicius de Moraes / Adoniran Barbosa) Sei Lá (A Vida Tem Sempre Razão) (Toquinho / Vinicius de Moraes) A Tonga da Mironga do Kabuletê (Toquinho / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 - Amor Em Paz (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) Insensatez (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

Hello, good afternoon! I was making a website migration yesterday and decided to read a magazine while waiting for a DNS refresh. This is the reason why I’m making this extraordinary mid afternoon post, since it was supposed to be released yesterday. Let’s see.

26 Chega de Saudade Renditions by Martoni

Exactly 50 years ago, precisely at 10 July 1958, Joao Gilberto started the studio session to record the landmark Bossa Nova album Chega de Saudade. This image was created with 26 albums covers with something in common, which one has a different rendition of Chega de Saudade. This is a really nice compilation assembled by Martoni on his homage to Bossa Nova 50th Anniversary, available on his website, following this link.

Maria Creuza - Poetico (1982) | Vinicius de Moraes Tribute

I believe that many friends will not understand why the back cover has the spotlight instead of the front cover with Maria Creuza photo. There is a special reason, Vinicius de Moraes, who left this planet on July 09, 2008, exactly 28 years ago. It has been twenty-eight years without Vinicius de Moraes. I remember the day of his passing as it was yesterday. Vinicius de Moraes lives through his work and should live for many decades; he is one of the most important Brazilian popular music artists. Let’s see.

This is Maria Creuza – Poetico (1982), for RCA, a tribute to Vinicius de Moraes, featuring only Vinicius de Moraes compositions, performed by Maria Creuza, a singer strongly influenced by Vinicius de Moraes, with several albums released with Vinicius, including the legendary live performances available on recording, such as “La Fusa”, recorded in Argentina. Jorge Ben - Historia da MPB (1970)

Hello, good evening! This is the album were the last challenge with Jorge Ben and Copa Trio was taken, by the way, another mom’s contribution. I was not thinking about showing at Loronix, but when I took it again today to scan a page, I could see that two tracks are Jorge Ben backed by J.T. Meirelles e Os Copa 5 and a strange force moved my body towards the turntable for a spin. Thanks to the Loronix friend that asked for the second page scan, it is included. Let’s see.

Toquinho - O Violao do Toquinho (1966)

Hello, good evening! Here we go on another contribution sent by my mother, strongly recommended by her. She also asked to release it in the beginning of this series and then alternate between Jorge Mello and her contributions. I think it is time to give Loronix control to her. Just kidding, it is a nice idea.

She is a big fan of Toquinho and Vinicius de Moraes, with some DVDs that she uses to spin very frequently, but mom said she got a little bit disappointed with this one, just for being an instrumental album, no lyrics and no singing. In the other hand, I’m really amazed with this one. Toquinho is mostly known as a singer and composer, but he is also a great instrumentalist, one of Paulinho Nogueira disciples. By the way, Toquinho has another instrumental only release at Loronix that you should not miss, here. Let’s see.

This is Toquinho – O Violao do Toquinho (1966), for RGE, featuring Toquinho violão accompanied by an unusual formation with drums, flute and organ played by Ely Arcoverde. I wish everybody a very productive and prosperous week. Tracks include:
