Anamaria & Mauricio - No, No, No... Estamos na Nossa (1970)

Hello, good evening! This is the first out of a series of posts sponsored by a family, serving Brazilian music to the world since 2004. Meet Jose Ignacio Neto, grandchild of the legendary Nono Ze, owner, founder and maintainer of one of the first podcast services made available online, AVolta, which was all about Brazilian music. I said was, but the legacy remains on line as several episodes available at Odeo and Podcast Directory. I’m not sure the music is still available, but Ignacio’s writings really worth checking out.

Anyway, Jose Ignacio Neto speaks about the Ignacio’s story and I would like to invite you to engage his first contribution, which is Anamaria and Mauricio first album by Continental in 1972, arranged by Antonio Adolfo, Chico de Moraes, Arthur Verocai and Jongo Trio. According with JIN, a sought after by DJs in Europe and Japan, featuring a Repertoire chosen by Antonio Adolfo who appears to be playing electric piano on most selections. Let’s see.

Jose Ignacio Neto welcome message to Loronix community:

In 2004, despite his great age, my grandfather Jose Ignacio Brasileiro de Souza e Castro, was one of the world's very first podcasters and the first person to podcast rare old Brasilian music to a curious world.

His podcast Avolta Brazilian Rare Grooves created each week in his apartment in Copacabana, was soon cult listening around the globe. However, in mid 2005 he passed away and for some time the music was stopped.

All was not lost, however, 'Nono Ze' as we liked to call him, left his entire record collections of over 150,000 78s, LPs, and cassettes to my father Jose Ignacio Jr. My father soon began to take up the podcast where Nono Ze left off. So was born Avolta Jr. Alas, my father was unable to find time to keep the podcasts going for more than one year, and even Avolta Jr also stopped podcasting. Further there was a big tragedy. His secret apartment in Flamengo (where my grandmother once believed Nono Ze kept his mistress but where in reality he kept his gigantic record collection) suffered from a terrible fire which melted so many of those fantastic records. But, not all of them...

But now it's the time to introduce myself Jose Ignacio Brasileiro de Souza e Castro Neto - that means grandson. That's right I am now the third member of my family to assume the Avolta name, and zecalouro has kindly invited me to post some of Nono Ze's fantastic collection of rare Brazilian records to help and assist the amazing work already taken by Zeca and his Loronix friends.

Marlene, Toquinho & Gianfrancesco Guarnieri - Botequim (1973)

Hello, good evening! I’m perhaps in the mood of addressing long time requests made by our community. That’s what happened in the last post by Sergio Ricardo and his sought after collaboration with Piri Reis and friends. And it happens again today with this unknown but fertile collaboration between Toquinho and Gianfrancesco Sigfrido Benedetto Marinenghi de Guarnieri, mostly known as Gianfrancesco Guarnieri, an important Brazilian actor and play writer.

In spite of being not credited as main performer at Botequim, Marlene, the great diva of the golden Radio Nacional years make the difference here. That’s why I decided to include her name as main performer at Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Marlene, Toquinho & Gianfrancesco Guarnieri – Botequim (1973), for RGE, featuring music composed by Toquinho and Gianfrancesco Guarnieri for three Guarnieri plays, Botequim, Castro Alves pede Passagem and Um Grito Parado no Ar. Loronixer’s Brazilian friends will immediately associate Gianfrancesco Guarnieri with the play Eles Nao usam Black Tie, written eight years later in 1981, an acknowledged play inside and outside Brazil. This is a nice album with Marlene delivering beautiful singing and Toquinho playing very solid. Tracks include:

Sergio Ricardo - Piri, Fred, Cassio, Franklin e Paulinho de Camafeu com Sergio Ricardo (1973)

Hello, good evening! I had an amazing week, with some problems in the middle, but the overall picture was very positive. And today was a special day. I was interviewed by a group of very nice friends, Loronixer’s friends by the way. They are running a documentary about the legendary Brazilian pianist Dom Salvador, which is also a very good friend of our community. I met Dom Salvador today and we spoke about music and about the albums Dom is having the opportunity to hear again via Loronix. Dom Salvador is a giant and a very kind gentleman. Thanks a lot Dom.

And my meeting with Dom Salvador was the end of my participation. However, I was invited to continue with the group and visit Elza Soares at her place in Copacabana to record the encounter of Don Salvador and Elza Soares after several years. Obviously, I took a fraction of a second to say “yes” and could stay for a couple of hours with Elza Soares, a marvelous woman who radiates peace and energy. Elza Soares is a great artist and a great human being.

I left the group in euphoria, having in mind something solid to Loronix today. And I could find for an unbelievable price one of most requested albums by our community featuring the Sergio Ricardo and Piri Reis delivering a surprisingly record that you cannot miss. Let’s see.

Rosana Toledo - ...e a Vida Continua (1962)

The last challenge game featuring Baden Powell and Rosana Toledo performing together was really interest. I was curious to understand why they were performing together, since I never heard about a connection between Baden and Rosana Toledo. The answer came yesterday with an interview made by Café Brasil with Rosana Toledo in June 2006, which I invite you to read at this link.

Rosana Toledo says that Baden Powell performs in some of her albums, and this one is probably included. They were friends in the very first beginning of Baden Powell career, which now explains that amazing photo. Rosana lives today at Retiro dos Artistas, a very important initiative in Rio de Janeiro, providing housing and support to artists with special needs. This is the repost of the Rosana Toledo second LP and her first album made available at Loronix in November 2006. Let’s see.

This is Rosana Toledo - ...e a Vida Continua (1962), for RGE, featuring arrangements by Maestro Nelsinho, in front of the legendary Orquestra RGE. Sister of Luiz Bonfa’s wife, Maria Helena Toledo, Rosana ended her career prematurely, after recording only five albums and a 78rpm. Her albums never had a chance of being reissued in CD and Loronix has some to offer, including her last album, a nice contribution made by Caetano Rodrigues, here. ...e a Vida Continua repertoire is based on Sambas by Noel Rosa, Jair Amorim, Vadico among others. Sergio Abreu & Eduardo Abreu - Os Violoes de Sergio e Eduardo Abreu (1971)

Hello, good evening! I’m asking myself why I did not make this post earlier. Several friends were asking for this album and I could understand why a couple of weeks ago when I took it for a spin. This duo is really magical, sublime and absolutely outstanding. The brothers Sergio and Eduardo Abreu were active during the 60’s and the early 70’s and they are considered by many the most amazing classical guitar ensemble ever. Just Google and you will understand. Decades were passed and they still have international acknowledgment. My apologies to everybody who asked for a Duo Abreu career album. Let’s see.

This is Sergio Abreu & Eduardo Abreu – Os Violoes de Sergio e Eduardo Abreu (1971), for Columbia. I never heard about a CD reissue of this album or any other Duo Abreu record. In the other hand, the Internet has plenty information about their music and I would like to recommend one of the best resources I found about Duo Abreu and Brazilian violão as well, which is the website owned and maintained by Fabio Zanon, a Brazilian musician that lead an anthological series of 26 radio programs called “A Arte do Violao”, mandatory for musicians and everybody who appreciates this wonderful instrument. I think the brothers Sergio and Eduardo Abreu are auto explanatory, I could stay here writing pages of text about their music, but is better let you with Duo Abreu. Luiz Eca - Brazil 70 (1970)

Hello, good evening! I need to reach my bed early today. It is necessary to wake up very early tomorrow to visit my vet for a scheduled maintenance. I was planning another release for today, a release sponsored by Jorge Mello that requires a solid research. I was very close to my bed when I remembered another Jorge Mello contribution that would be really easy to review, which is this one, an album recorded by Luiz Eca in 1970 for Philips, produced by Roberto Menescal and – as the cover shows – tailored for the international market. Let’s see.

This is Luiz Eca – Brazil 70 (1970), for Philips. Besides Luiz Eca piano and arrangements in all tracks, little I know about this album. My Google searches did not return credits on musicians and additional details on this session. This is a Luiz Eca career album that I never heard about and we should say “Thank You!” to Jorge Mello for another fantastic addition to Loronix. Tracks include:

Altamiro Carrilho & Canhoto e Seu Regional - Choros Imortais (1964)

It has been two months since we made the last Choro album at Loronix. It is a lot of time, and to fulfill the needs of several friends, including Martoni, from The Netherlands, I would like to offer what is considered by many, the best Choro album recorded in Brazil. Actually, the first out of two legendary Choro albums recorded by Altamiro Carrilho and Regional do Canhoto titled “Choros Imortais”. Let’s see.

This is Altamiro Carrilho & Canhoto e Seu Regional – Choros Imortais (1964), for Copacabana, presented here by a SOM SOLP reissue, probably released in the late 60’s. I could not track any information about the release year. Altamiro Carrilho has several albums available at Loronix, but it is the first time an album with the participation of Canhoto is being released. Canhoto, born as Waldiro Frederico Tramontano, was an important Choro musician. He lead more than 40 years his Conjunto Regional, responsible for the first steps of several renowned musicians in the style, such like Dino 7 Cordas, Altamiro Carrilho, Meira, Orlando Silveira, Gilson de Freitas and after the departure of Altamiro Carrilho in the early 60’s, Carlos Poyares. This photo brings Canhoto e Seu Regional in the 50’s, taken from Acervo Sergio Prata and probably features the members of this recording session, not provided by Copacabana. Tracks include:

Sorry, I could not resist extending today’s challenge a little bit showing Baden Powell again. Both photos were taken at the anthological Bossa Nova concert at Faculdade de Arquitetura, Rio de Janeiro, 1959. This second challenge has also only one artist to be identified. Just tell me how is playing trumpet behind Baden Powell. Not so easy, but I think people should make it very fast this time.

Baden Powell - Baden Powell (1971)

Hello, good evening! I’m late for today’s post, but it is for a very good reason. Loronix page load time was increasing daily and some friends were even with no access to Loronix. It was a critical situation, fixed by the replacement of CBox, also known as Quadradinho, for another tagboard solution. Cbox was the root cause of the problem. You should feel the difference while reading this message.

Anyway, I’m really tired and this is not the best situation to write this important post, kindly made available by the great Jorge Mello. This album was recorded by Baden Powell in Paris, just after the excellent series of three albums called Baden Powell Quartet Volumes 1, 2 and 3. This album does not have a title and you need to take it on your hands to read the back cover and understands that Baden Powell makes a tribute album for two great musicians with a strong influence of Baden’s career, which are Pixinguinha and the legendary Garoto. Baden Powell performs four renditions of each one and completes the repertoire with two compositions by his own. Let’s see.

This is Baden Powell – Baden Powell (1971), for Barclay, a tribute to Pixinguinha and Garoto, with Baden performing and singing with one of his favorite’s divas, Jeanine de Waleyne. Baden Powell is an awesome musician and there is something that really makes him different from all others, he puts passion on everything and this makes the different, especially on these renditions of two other geniuses. We should say thank you to Jorge Mello for this really nice album. Tracks include:
