When this current Caetano's package was being prepared, we have been speaking about the selection and Caetano, as always, prepared some surprises that are only revealed to me by the time I receive everything by mail. Caetano said sometimes to be sending a record called "O Melhor de Os Cariocas". I always answered that it was a great choice, having in mind Caetano was sending some sort of compilation as the title suggests.
I was wrong, once again. Caetano will read this text with a smile on his face, since he could really knock me down with this album.
Attention, do not let the cover cheat you. This is not a compilation or one of those "The Best of" records, Caetano shows us a career album from us Cariocas, so obscure that I never heard about and probably many fans of Os Cariocas will be really surprised when reaching Loronix.
This is Os Cariocas - O Melhor de Os Cariocas (1958), for Columbia. Little is known about this album, so I will tell what I think we have here. Perhaps this is the first and only Os Cariocas album with English lyrics, not all tunes. You can see beautiful colored letters on cover building the name "Os Cariocas", however, some reviewers and websites takes Severino Filho as the main performer, which is something with a little importance, since Severino Filho is a member of Os Cariocas. There is one thing I'm sure, we should send many thanks to Caetano Rodrigues for sending this album to Loronixers. I know many Os Cariocas fans that will make their day. Thanks Caetano for gathering the "impossible" to our community. Tracks include:
01. Chega de Saudade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
02. Chá-chá-chá Baiano (Getúlio Macedo)
03. É Gostoso Beijar (Severino Filho / Alberto Paz)
04. Born Too Late (F. Tobias / C. Strouse)
05. Marca na Parede (Ismael Netto / Mário Faccini)
06. Always And Forever (K. Millet / J. Gold)
07. Valsa de Uma Cidade (Ismael Netto / Antônio Maria)
08. Quem É (Oldemar Magalhães / Osmar Navarro)
09. Afinal (Ismael Netto / Luis Bittencourt)
10. Samba Rock (B. Moore / Reg Simpson / J. Bradford)
11. Menina Feia (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
12. Menina (Édson Borges / De Castro)
13. Silhouettes (F. C. Slay Jr. / B. Crewe)
14. Madrugada 3 05 (Ismael Netto / Antônio Maria / Reinaldo Dias Leme)

Hi Zeca,
again a wonderful surprise with this album. In Ruy Castro`s Bossa Nova book we can read, that in 1958 Os Carioca`s guitar player was not able to play the Bossa-guitar beat. So Joao Gilberto took the guitar part on "Chega de Saudade" but was not credited on the album sleeve. This information is confirmed by www.dictionariompb.com.br.
zeca, this is a wonderful surprise. I too had assumed that this was a compilation. I'm downloading it now, so I haven't heard it yet, but the anticipation is great.
The photo is wonderful too- I had never seen this one before. At first I thought it was a video, and I just about fell off my chair.
Many thanks to you and Caetano.
The photo is from the film "Copacabana Palace"(1962)
Also in this film is the famous beach scene with Jobim, Bonfa and Joao Gilberto. Joao Gilberto and Os Cariocas perform "So Danco Samba" in a short club sequence. This film is available on DVD only in Italy.
Hi Zeca,
I think this album is really a compilation, composed of previous 78rpm recordings and some tunes included in the Cariocas first LP (Os Cariocas a Ismael Netto, also a Columbia release): Marca na parede, Valsa de uma cidade, Afinal, Madrugada 3:05, and so on...
And a highlight about the photo: the guy with the guitar at the bottom right corner is Joao Gilberto, not a formal Cariocas's member. Tjey are playing Só danço samba in the film Copacabana Palace.
Ola Zeca and Caetano,
really an intersting thing what happened here now in talking about this album. I cannot help .I never saw it since I look for brazilian Lps-Caetano allways tops himself.
beautiful!
Best wishes
Oh I forgotten this thing about Joao and Os Cariocas my brazilian musicfriend Frank-Oliver told about -but as we are talking about J.Gilberto I remember about a special compacto of Jonas Silva with Joao Gilberto -Ruy Custro tells very important things about.
I believe since Jonas Silva's compacto with B.Powell is great. I want to make possible a great thing. I have here Frank-Oliver's DVD movie:Copacabana Palace- I will try to record this scne with Joao Gilberto and send to Zeca.
Best wishes
bossanovadreamer,
