Orquestra Arco-Iris - Palmas para o Samba! (1963)

Another fantastic Caetano Rodrigues contribution and also an one of a kind album performed by top-notch Brazilian musicians. This cover artwork alone worth the overall experience, Palmas para o Samba! is an orchestra album with an additional feature, palmas (hands clapping) are used throughout the album as a percussion instrument. Different from many instrumental albums of that time, personnel is detailed, except the group of folks that clap hands all the time.

This is Orquestra Arco-Iris - Palmas para o Samba! (1963), for Polydor. Maestro Carioca and Maestro Arcy Barbosa are the leaders of Orquestra Arco-Iris, which is a group of musicians from the cast of the legendary TV Rio - Rio de Janeiro, Canal 13. Maestro Carioca is in charge of arrangements and Maestro Arcy Barbosa plays sax and conducts Orchestra Arco-Iris. You should not miss this really unique orchestra. Tracks include:

Azimuth - O Fabuloso Fittipaldi | Trilha Sonora do Filme (1973)

Hello, Good Evening! Starting today with a very requested repost. Actually, not a repost, this album was available at Loronix for a very short period of time and went off-line due some problems with ripping quality. I'm glad that Caetano Rodrigues sent it to us. This is Azimuth - O Fabuloso Fittipaldi | Trilha Sonora do Filme (1973), for Philips, featuring a very early Azimuth performing Marcos Valle and Paulo Sergio Valle compositions for the Original Soundtrack of O Fabuloso Fittipaldi, a documentary on the legendary race driver Emerson Fittipaldi. The album brings some speech by Emerson Fittipaldi and her wife Maria Helena, but Azimuth performances on top of Marcos and Paulo Sergio Valle compositions are really amazing. I never saw this movie before to see how music blends with film images and as a big Formula 1 fan I'm now very curious to watch it. Tracks include:

Clara Nunes - Clara Clarice Clara (1972)

It has been almost a year since the last Clara Nunes album was made available at Loronix. Clara Nunes is the favorite of many Loronixers. We made a survey in the very first beginning of Loronix to point out the greatest Brazilian Diva ever and Elis Regina was the winner. My fault to do not include Clara Nunes as an option and I'm sure she would be in the top three if included.

This is Clara Nunes - Clara Clarice Clara (1972), for Odeon. Clara Nunes started her recording career in the late 60's and these first ones are the albums available at Loronix. She started as a romantic singer, making a gradual change to Samba that came to a term with Clara, Clarice, Clara, her first album fully dedicated to the style. Later, Clara Nunes introduced Afro-Brazilian elements to her recordings, such as the use of lyrics based on religions such like Candomble and others. This album was found on MINT conditions and the vinyl was played for the first time this week, everything is fine here, from cover scans to the music. Tracks include:

Awesome! Wow! Everything works here. Caetano Rodrigues should have a new and not revealed trick on his vinyl transfers. Bossa Nova compilations released in the 60's are really fantastic. I'm glad of asking Caetano to include this album featuring selected songs from Som Maior label cast. You should not miss. I recommend.

Conjunto A Voz do Morro - Roda de Samba (1965)

Hello, Good Evening! I'm late and in a big rush today, another great sunny day in Rio de Janeiro. I made an attempt to go to the beach today, my first attempt after a decade or so. The results were... Well, I will tell you later, let's be straightforward with the first post, a Samba post and a "classic" Samba album provided by the mysterious Samba contributor, featuring several Brazilian Samba Legends.

This is Conjunto A Voz do Morro - Roda de Samba (1965), for Musidisc. Such like "Os Cinco Crioulos" released last week, this is a fantastic Samba record that makes you think it was released earlier than its first issue, 1965. Conjunto A Voz do Samba recorded three albums before dismissing and this is the first. The formation varies on each album, but each one brings a constellation of Samba artists. There is a curious story about this first, although the legendary Ze Ketti was the leader of Conjunto A Voz do Morro, he did not took part in this set due his contractual obligations with Philips and his involvement with the launching of Show Opiniao with Nara Leao. Os Intocaveis - Os Intocaveis (1964)

Sabadabada last update included this album and perhaps Loronixers are already with Os Intocaveis in their collection. However, it is a masterpiece that cannot be a missing piece at Loronix. Additionally, Caetano made a wonderful job on converting from vinyl to digital, as always. This is a truly awesome Samba/Bossa Jazz instrumental piece with not credited musicians as bass, guitar, drums, piano, trombone, flute, oboe, sax baritone and two percussionist and I invite everybody to identify them.

This is Os Intocaveis - Os Intocaveis (1964), for Audio Fidelity. Nice repertoire mixing well-known Bossa Nova standards, Jorge Ben and also international songs. The back cover liner notes is open and honest with us saying that personnel includes excellent musicians, not credited due contract obligations with others record labels, saying also there is a main artist from the cast of another label. Do not let the word "Danca" at album title cheats you. This is not a dancing LP and also not a regular album. Brasil em Tempo de Danca is an album by Luiz Arruda Paes, the acclaimed Brazilian Maestro, zecalouro's favorite Maestro. Thanks Caetano for making this album available with not planning, very nice surprise. I urge Loronixers to check this album and also earlier Luiz Arruda Paes available here. This is Luiz Arruda Paes, Seu Coro e Sua Orquestra - Brasil em Tempo de Danca (1959), for Odeon. It's hard to believe how Caetano has this pretty hard to find album on MINT conditions, cover artwork with no scratches and vinyl as taken from the envelop for the first time. Luiz Arruda Paes has orchestra and choir at his service, delivering orchestra arrangements for a nice repertoire of Brazilian standards. Caetano asked to highlight Ho Ba La La as his best pick with Luiz Arruda Paes mixing male and female voices of his choir on a fascinating texture. Luiz Arruda Paes is still active and I'm making available a video with the Maestro conducting an orchestra with his arrangements for Asa Branca. This video was recorded less than 15 days ago at Festival de Inverno de Campos do Jordao and it is Loronix celebration to Luiz Arruda Paes. Tracks include:

Jair Rodrigues - E Isso Ai (1971)

Hello, Good Evening! We had a hot Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, such like summer, a summer inside winter. I hope the weather keeps sunny for the next three weeks. Rio is hosting the XV Pan-American Games, which is something like the Olympics, but only for Americas and sub-regions. I can feel the Olympic atmosphere; the city starts to be "in the mood". In front of my place, they built an arena for beach volley, which is a sport that Brazil has a great chance to win a gold medal. Anyway, Saturday, sun up all day, people in the streets, Loronix = Samba today, we need to start with a solid Samba album today.

This is Jair Rodrigues - É Isso Ai (1971), for Philips, which is Jair Rodrigues at his peak. He is one of the most commercial and popular Samba interpreters of all time, mainly at the 60's and 70's decades. Hearing this album, I it is easy to identify several tunes that were blockbusters by the release time, as Tengo Tengo, Herois da Liberdade, Martin Cerere, O Importante e Ser Fevereiro, and others. Bud Shank / Clare Fischer / Joe Pass - Brasamba (1963)

We should thanks Caetano Rodrigues for this album, part of his last set of contributions to Loronix. Released in 1963, this is one of those albums recorded by American Jazz musicians in response of the arriving of Bossa Nova in the United States. Bossamba was on my hunting list since I saw it for the first time in Caetano Rodrigues book, now is time to hear it, altogether with my friends at Loronix.

This is Bud Shank, Clare Fischer and Joe Pass - Brasamba (1963), for Pacific Jazz. In spite of its importance, Brasamba worth by putting together these three legends. Bud Shank, a well-known artist by his great collaboration to the music from Brazil and Brazilian musicians, pretty recently, he recorded another album together with Joao Donato. Clare Fischer is a gifted pianist that was introduced for the first time with a fantastic Bossa Nova record by Caetano, the first international Bossa Nova album made available at Loronix. Joe Pass is a name that does not need any kind of introduction, one of the great Jazz guitar players. They are accompanied by bass, vibes and percussion, as detailed on personnel listing, just before tracks. Tracks include:

Music Video | Antonio Carlos Jobim - Dindi / Luiza (1987) Japan

In the very first beginning of Loronix, I received from a Japanese friend a video with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Banda Nova performing live in Japan, according with this friend, the performance happened in 1987, Japan, city of Hibiya. By that time he said it was a personal gift, not to be shown at Loronix as the audience had some blank spaces and this was not good.

After a year, I watched the video again and my first reaction was to send an email to him asking for a new permission. He wrote back in a matter of hours saying that since then, Loronix changed his mind, his habits and his life, giving also the needed authorization.

This is the kind of thing that makes my day. I'm so glad with Loronixers and the community we created together around this website.

Watch this video with attention, it is unique, I never saw The Maestro with such deep feelings performing at the piano. A Very special moment. The songs are Dindi and Luiza. Thanks Japanese friend.
