Sergio Mendes - Sergio Mendes' Favorite Things (1967)

I think my Sergio Mendes education is over with the release of this brand new contribution from Caetano Rodrigues, or at least "phase one" education has gone to a term. A couple of days before I understood my worries about Sergio Mendes, blame it on the Arara album with a Macaw at the cover with the wings clipped on a way I never saw before. Who knows later I show you this album, widely unknown Sergio Mendes LP.

This is Sergio Mendes - Sergio Mendes' Favorite Things (1967), for Atlantic. I decided to do not make any kind of research about Favorite Things and based on I heard this is another "transitional" Sergio Mendes album from the Bossa Nova oriented years to the late more "commercial" Sergio Mendes. The Favorite Things title suggests a compilation; anyway, Caetano should bring more clarification tomorrow when I reach him by phone, although I'm sure I will wake up with several comments waiting for approval. Tracks include:

01 - My Favorite Things(R. Rodgers / O. Hammerstein II)
02 - Tempo Feliz (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 - Ponteio (Edu Lobo / Capinan)
04 - Veleiro (Edu Lobo / Torquato Neto)
05 - A Banda (Chico Buarque)
06 - I Say a Little Prayer (Burt Bacharach / H. David)
07 - Comin' Home Baby (B. Tucker / B. Dorough)
08 - Boa Palavra (Caetano Veloso)
09 - O Mar É Meu Chão (Dori Caymmi / Nelson Motta)
10 - So What's New (J. Pisano)

Ed Lincoln - Seu Piano e Seu Orgao Espetacular (1963)

It is always nice to visit an old vinyl shop with a friend to hunt records together, but some embarrassing situations always occur. It does not happen with Caetano, that has everything and the last time that happened was with Moos, from the Netherlands. The situation happens when your friend find first the record that you are looking for. It is a weird feeling, because you stay happy and a little bit sad at the same time. Not a problem with the great Moos that sent the ones that he found first just when he arrived home.

This is Ed Lincoln - Seu Piano e Seu Orgao Espetacular (1963), for Musidisc, really above the average Ed Lincoln album, lyrics in most of the tracks, Orlandivo and Pedrinho Rodrigues as special guests and that infectious Hammond B3 organ groove provided by Ed Lincoln. I decided to keep Moos ripping untouched, so you will have eventual clicks and clacks at the end and beginning of each track. Tracks include:

01 - Miss Balanço (Heitor Menezes)
02 - Só Danço Samba (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 - Vou Rir de Você (Heitor Menezes)
04 - Influência do Jazz (Carlos Lyra)
05 - Um Samba Gostoso (Ed Lincoln)
06 - Vamos Balançar (Carlos Imperial)
07 - O Samba É Bom Assim (Pra Mim) (Hélio Nascimento / Norival Reis)
08 - Pra Que (Silvio César)
09 - É Um Estouro (Jaime Silva / Neusa Teixeira / Luis Pereira)
10 - Balansamba Nº 1 (Luis Bandeira)
11 - Tristeza (Ed Lincoln / Luis Bandeira)
12 - Olhou Pra Mim (Ed Lincoln / Silvio César)

Roberto Silva - Descendo o Morro Nr. 3 (1960)

Hello, Good Evening! I like Saturday nights at Loronix, it is the day of experiments and also a day of Samba. This is the deal, we will start with Samba and then I will try to figure out what should be an exciting experiment, showing music from an artist, a genre or from a certain Brazilian region never released before at Loronix. I think it will be real cool.

This is Roberto Silva - Descendo o Morro Nr. 3 (1960), for Copacabana. In spite of being a classic Samba album, this is one of those that you buy just by the cover that really worth the admission price. This is a 1991 Beverly reissue and I'm not sure if the original cover matches with this one. Roberto Silva is a renowned Samba interpreter in Brazil, active from the late 30's until today at the age of 87. Personnel is not credited, but delivers strong accompaniment to the classic voice of Roberto Silva with wonderful trombone solos that will make you wonder who is playing. Tracks include:

01 - Curare (Bororó)
02 - Domine a Sua Paixão (João Bastos Filho / Djalma Mafra)
03 - Juramento Falso (J. Cascata / Leonel Azevedo)

05 - Palpite Infeliz (Noel Rosa)
06 - Boogie-woogie na Favela (Denis Brean)

Breno Sauer Quarteto - 4 na Bossa (1966)

Hello, Good Evening! I was wondering the right time to show this album to Loronixers and I think the time has come with this One million hits barrier we broke today and also with the hint send by Good Groove at the previous Tamba Trio post. This is a really great Samba Jazz set from the old times, recorded by another artist that I learned to admire at Loronix.

This is Breno Sauer Quarteto - 4 na Bossa (1966), for Musidisc, perhaps one of the best records ever made in the 60's by the Brazilian pianist, arranger and composer Breno Sauer. Thanks Good Groove for bringing this fantastic album back to this parrot memory. I'm brief today; several emails are reaching my mailbox such like a waterfall on a tiny cup of tea. Stay tuned for the next releases of the day. Tracks include:

Edu Lobo, Johnny Alf, Taiguara e Pery Ribeiro - Juntos! (1988)

Here we go again with another Caetano Rodrigues contribution, this time different, since Caetano gave this record as a gift on my last trip to Sao Paulo. Thanks Caetano. However, simplicity is not a word on Caetano's dictionary. Caetano said to let it ready and wait for further instructions. That's what I did, like a soldier and the instructions had just arrived here: release at 1 Million Hits day. Very wise of Caetano, 5 artists together on a single album is really a celebration.

This is Juntos! (1988), for Phonodisc, featuring Edu Lobo, Johnny Alf, Taiguara, Pery Ribeiro and Sergio Ricardo. I just spoke with Caetano about Juntos! and we agreed that some tracks were released only at this album and never were made available on regular releases by these artists. Any help to realize which are the songs never released on regular albums is really appreciated. Tracks include:

01 - O Nosso Olhar - SERGIO RICARDO
02 - Uma Vez um Caso - EDU LOBO
03 - O Amor da Justica - TAIGUARA

Special Post | One Million Hits

I never though we could make one million page views with Loronix, but we did it today. I can remember when we made 10,000. I got so excited that I took the phone to talk with zecalouro's mother. Wow, 1 Million?

Thanks everybody, this is an important milestone. Thanks a million gpicanco, for documenting the turn of the one extra digit on our counter, take a look bellow, time was 5:25pm. Great work gpicanco.

Thanks Loronixers,

zecalouro

ps.: I hope everybody understand the joke with that giant corn...

Last Minute Information: A musical celebration is scheduled for the next week, powered by Caetano Rodrigues, which is guaranteed high quality music, Caetano's Top Ten celebration... Stay tuned...

Tamba Trio - Avanco (1963)

Loronix has been receiving new friends in the last week, on a manner that I could not identify; no major announcement was made on other community. Anyway, as new friends come that old and impossible to answer question comes again, which is, what are the best albums you recommend at Loronix... It is not an easy answer. I've been thinking about making a list, but the chance of leaving something out of it is disturbing. That's why I decided to repost one of the first and most representative Bossa Nova albums made available, since I got it on vinyl recently on a very good quality.

This is Tamba Trio - Avanco (1963), for Philips, second LP by Tamba Trio, lead by the mighty Luiz Eca. Avanco is probably the album the best blends instrumental and vocal arrangements at Tamba Trio whole discography. Bebeto, Tamba Trio bass player and multi-instrumentalist makes the difference here, playing also sax and flute. Durval Ferreira almost makes Tamba Trio a quartet, playing violao in all tracks. Tracks include:

Personnel

Luiz Eca
(piano, arrangements, musical direction)
Bebeto
(bass, sax tenor, sax baritono, flute)
Helcio Milito
(percussion)
Durval Ferreira
(violao)

Track List

01 - Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 - Mas Que Nada (Jorge Ben "Jorge Benjor")
03 - Negro (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
04 - Mania de Maria (Luis Bonfá / Maria Helena Toledo)
05 - Vento do Mar (Durval Ferreira / Luis Fernando Freire)
06 - Sonho de Maria (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
07 - Só Danço Samba (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
08 - O Samba da Minha Terra (Dorival Caymmi)
09 - Moça Flor (Durval Ferreira / Luis Fernando Freire)
10 - Rio (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)

12 - Esperança (Durval Ferreira / Luis Fernando Freire / Maurício Einhorn)

Tania Maria - Tania Maria Live (1979)

Hello, Good Evening! Everybody knows that Tania Maria is among the artists that I have limited knowledge about, but I know that Tania Maria puts her heart on top of everything she makes, mainly live concerts, which are the ones that I like most. This concert was first made available with the help of Jean-Yves, also known as Jean do Trombone, and now Caetano Rodrigues makes it again on a better quality, for mine and for Loronixers pleasure.

This is Tania Maria - Tania Maria Live (1979), for Accord, live performance at the Azzhus Montmartre, Copenhagen, featuring Tania Maria (piano and vocal), Andre Ceccarelli (bass) and Marc Bertheaux (drums). I decided to make it with no track separation, delivering to Loronixers a single track for each side. Take also a time to watch the video with Tania Maria performing live. Tracks include:

01 - Mr. & Mrs.
02 - Cartomante
03 - Pingas da Vida
04 - Seu Dia Vai Chegar
05 - O Que e Amar

Boca Livre - Boca Livre (1979)

Boca Livre is a Brazilian vocal group that had some importance in the early 80's. This is their first LP and it was released independently of record labels. Anyway, there is no much importance so far, several albums were released independently, but this one has something different, if you were in Brazil by this time, you will remember that this album was a blockbuster and performed very well at both sides, commercially and artistic, let's now understand what we have here.

This is Boca Livre - Boca Livre (1979), Boca Livre debut LP, released independently by Mauricio Maestro (instrumental and voice arrangements, bass, vocals), Ze Renato (violao, vocals), Claudio Nucci (violao, vocals) and David Tygel (violao, vocals). The first two tracks of this album - Quem Tem a Viola and Toada - are directly responsible for the commercial triumph and really worth the entire record. Boca Livre is still active, although this original formation has changed several times since this first and essential album. Tracks include:

01 - Quem Tem a Viola (Cecilia) (Zé Renato / Xico Chaves / Cláudio Nucci / Juca Filho)
02 - Toada (Na Direção do Dia) (Zé Renato / Cláudio Nucci / Juca Filho)
03 - Mistérios (Maurício Maestro / Joyce)
04 - Boi (Nelson Ângelo)
05 - Diana (Toninho Horta / Fernando Brant)
06 - Ponta de Areia (Milton Nascimento / Fernando Brant)
07 - Feito Mistério (Lourenço Baeta / Cacaso)
08 - Pedra da Lua (Toninho Horta / Cacaso)
09 - Barcarola do São Francisco (Geraldo Azevedo / Carlos Fernando)
10 - Fazenda (Nelson Ângelo)
11 - Minha Terra (Tema da Peça Teatral "Papa Highirte) (David Tygel / Oduvaldo Viana Filho)

Peruzzi, Sua Orquestra e Coro - Rio-Show (1965)

That's it. I was a little bit concerned on publishing this album, since it is another Rio de Janeiro cover artwork among several at Loronix. However, Caetano said something that I did not noticed after several visual examinations at this cover that really worth show Loronixers. This is also another of those albums made for a specific purpose that were not put available commercially, just like the last Brazil by Music - Fly Cruzeiro first presented at Quimsy.

This is Peruzzi, Sua Orquestra e Coro - Rio-Show (1965), for Odeon (printing). Odeon just printed Rio-Show as a request of Brazilian Government by Secretaria de Turismo do Estado da Guanabara as part of IV Centenario da Cidade de Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro, the 400 years celebration of Rio de Janeiro City. zecalouro did not see and Caetano said at a first sight, the picture shows the construction phase of what is known today as Aterro do Flamengo or Parque do Flamengo. Before Aterro do Flamengo construction, the sea border was almost a kilometer inside, touching the buildings. I wish I could find a photo taken before Aterro do Flamengo construction taken at the same spot of this one. The comparison would be amazing. Anyway, this is a nice orchestra with choir album with arrangements and conduction by the Brazilian Maestro Peruzzi. Tracks include:

01 - Cidade Maravilhosa (André Filho)
02 - Fim de Semana Em Paquetá (João de Barro / Alberto Ribeiro)
03 - Corcovado (Tom Jobim)
04 - Favela (Roberto Martins / Waldemar Silva)
05 - Sábado Em Copacabana (Dorival Caymmi / Carlos Guinle)
06 - Rio de Janeiro (Ary Barroso)
07 - Copacabana (João de Barro / Alberto Ribeiro)
08 - Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
09 - A Voz do Morro (Zé Keti)
10 - Balanço Zona Sul (Tito Madi)
11 - Rio (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
12 - Cidade de São Sebastião (Peruzzi / Moacir Vieira)
