VERY jealous of this autographed sleave. This album's always been a favorite even if Deodato is overpowering Donato. Should be called Deodato Deodato ; )
My sleeve of this is autographed too! I met the great and somewhat elusive Joao Donato, one of my icons, backstage at the Blue Note in NY in July 2000 when he played a week there accompanied by Joyce. I brought a bunch of Donato and Joyce LPs to get signed and they signed them all!!! By the way, this session is often wrongly listed as being done in 1969, the truth is that it was recorded around 1972 and released a year later. Apparently Donato owed the label owner a session but was in a hurry to go back to Brazil after 13 years in the States. So he recorded a bunch of improvisations and told the producer to get Eumir Deodato to make an album out of them! I got this story from Eumir himself. Eumir was reduced to hiring all the musicians and finishing the album, playing in Donato's style, at the very moment when Eumir's "Prelude" album was at the top of the charts!! They didn't speak again for many years after that....maybe not even to this day!
Yes, absolutely that story about Donato leaving Deodato "holding the bag" for this album is definitely true. Donato actually walked out on the recording session and called from a pay phone at the airport!
Despite Donato being one of my absolute music heroes (he is one of my discography artists, after all) and having the kind of piano playing style that I love to listen to, this is *NOT* one of my favorite Donato albums. In fact, it's one of the ones I play the very least. I just don't care for the stylings and arrangements. It also sounds very "dated", locked in the 70s. Sorry, Joao (and Eumir)....!
