Joao Gilberto - The Legendary Joao Gilberto (1988)

Joao Gilberto is one of the artists with the strongest association with Bossa Nova. His debut LP, Chega de Saudade, landmarks the birth of Bossa Nova and will make its 50th anniversary next year, 2008. Joao Gilberto is popular as it was 4 decades ago, following the same style throughout five decades. It has been a long time since the last Joao Gilberto LP was released at Loronix and I'm sure this post will end this hiatus with style. Let's see.

This is Joao Gilberto - The Legendary Joao Gilberto (1988), for EMI-Odeon, featuring the first three Joao Gilberto LPs, Chega de Saudade (1958), O Amor o Sorriso e a Flor (1960) and Joao Gilberto (1961) plus the four tracks from EP, Orfeu do Carnaval. We are showing the 1990 World Pacific reissue, CD version. This album was recorded with no authorization by Joao Gilberto and was taken from the stores after a very short legal dispute. If you are a fan of Joao Gilberto, this should be heaven on earth, 38 tracks and more than an hour of the young Joao Gilberto at CD quality. Tracks include:

01 - Chega de Saudade
02 - Desafinado
03 - Samba de Uma Nota Só

The sound quality of this re-issue is not very good, it was remixed by EMI, I think. An unaltered version (with different tracklisting) was released in 2 CDs (and LPs) by Tropical Music, Germany.
When I first listened to the EMI re-issue I didn't like it, I was a bit disappointed. Years later, when I listened to the original versions, I realized why - the strange reverb they added...

This CD is even better if you take a little time to rearrange the tracks in the original order of the albums. Obrigado.

I just wanted to thank you for posting this music, which for some crazy reason was allowed to go out of print. I also want to thank you your web site more generally. I can't believe how much great music you have collected here. All fans of Brazilian music owe you an incredible debt of gratitude. I think that Brazil should give you some kind of medal, too!!!! This site is a treasure. Thanks!!!! P.S. Jim R said to give his best. (He turned me on to Loronix.)

I was lucky enough to buy this on CD at the time (I worked in a record store at that time) and have since made copies for several of my friends... unbelievable that this is out of print at the moment, truly beautiful and timeless music this.
