Music Video | Erroll Garner - Samba de Uma Nota So (1962)

Luiz Harding sent us a video this week that is really worth showing Loronixers. Erroll Garner and crew recorded it in 1962. I don't have info about the nature of this performance, perhaps a rehearsal or a TV show, but they are really confused playing Samba de Uma Nota So (One Note Samba). This video helps understanding how difficult it was for international musicians to play Bossa Nova. Thanks Luiz Harding, nice pick.

Hope uEnjoy!

It's always great to see Erroll play. He's really one of the most "playful" jazz artists ever, and I do like the feel of this version, including his trademark "out of time" playing, which always sounds sincer to me, never like a gimmick or trick. This is probably about as bossa as Erroll could probably get, and his inventiveness is a joy to hear as always. Obrigado for this fun clip!

Yes Adamzinho, Erroll Garner was famous for to play "out of time" - this is a nice video- thanks to Luiz- and for sure to Zeca

Best wishes

Garner may not have been completely familiar with the tune as written and performed by brazilian musicians, but I suspect it has more to do with the fact that he was a jazz musician and didn't intend to play it "straight", melodically or rhythmically (although at times the melody does sound confused). Garner had his own rhythmic conception (the "tension" he created with his style of playing was somewhat unique and a trademark of his). So, I'm really not surprised by the way he chose to interpret this bossa nova standard.

(JC)
